If you’re pricing up a new garden fence in Glasgow, the honest answer is that most standard installations land between £110 and £210 per linear metre, installed. Where you sit in that range depends mostly on the fence style, and the rest comes down to your ground, access and boundary. Here’s the full breakdown, using the same guide rates we quote from.
Fencing cost per metre (Glasgow, 2026)
| Fence style | Installed price from |
|---|---|
| Lap / overlap panel | £110 per metre |
| Closeboard / featheredge | £135 per metre |
| Single-sided contemporary slatted | £150 per metre |
| Double-sided privacy slatted | £180 per metre |
These rates are based on a standard 1.8m-high fence on runs of 10 metres or more with normal access and ground conditions. Short runs are priced as a fixed job rather than by the metre, because the setup and materials minimums are the same whether the run is 4 metres or 14.
Removal of an existing timber fence is included where required — you shouldn’t be paying extra to have the old one taken away on a standard job.
What that means for a typical garden
| Run length | Lap panel | Closeboard | Single slatted | Double slatted |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 10m | from £1,100 | from £1,350 | from £1,500 | from £1,800 |
| 15m | from £1,650 | from £2,025 | from £2,250 | from £2,700 |
| 20m | from £2,200 | from £2,700 | from £3,000 | from £3,600 |
A matching timber pedestrian gate starts from £350 installed. Drive-through and slatted gates are quoted to suit the opening, posts and hardware.
What’s included at these prices
A fence is only as strong as the posts supporting it, so the specification matters more than the panel you can see:
- Concrete-set posts, set to the right depth and properly haunched, with post size and spacing matched to the fence and its wind exposure
- Gravel boards as standard, keeping the fence timber off the ground and away from prolonged moisture
- Correct treatment for every component: ground-contact-grade timber for posts and timber gravel boards, pressure-treated exterior-grade timber for rails and boards, with cut ends protected
- Old timber fence removal where required
- A 5-year written workmanship guarantee covering posts, panels and gates
When a quote comes in well under these rates, it’s usually one of those items being skipped — most often post depth, gravel boards or the treatment grade. That’s where leaning posts and rotted bases come from a few winters later.
What changes the price
Ground conditions
Substantial roots, buried concrete (old post footings, for example) and rocky ground slow down post-hole digging and are quoted separately once we’ve seen them. Soft or made-up ground can need deeper posts.
Slopes and retaining
A sloping garden usually just means stepping the panels, which is normal work. But where the fence line has to hold back soil, that’s retaining work — a different structure, quoted separately.
Access
Good access to the fence line keeps the standard rate. Long carries, tight closes or working entirely from one side of the boundary add labour time.
Gates and extras
Gates, masonry walls, and removal of trees, hedges or contaminated waste are always itemised separately, so you can see exactly what each part costs.
Concrete or timber posts?
Concrete posts don’t suffer from rot at ground level and can give a very long service life. Timber posts give a more traditional all-timber look. There’s no universally right answer — it depends on your garden’s exposure, the fence style and your budget, and it’s something we’ll recommend on at the survey.
Do you need planning permission for a fence in Scotland?
Many rear and side garden fences in Scotland can be installed without planning permission, but height and location matter — particularly beside roads, in conservation areas or around listed buildings. If anything about your boundary looks like it needs checked with the council, we’ll flag it during the survey rather than leave it to chance.
How long does it take?
Standard garden fencing is often completed within 1–3 days. Larger runs and double-sided slatted installations take longer because every slat is fixed individually.
Getting an exact price
Per-metre rates get you to a sensible budget, but the only accurate price is a fixed written quote after someone has actually looked at your boundary, ground and access. We survey for free across Glasgow and the surrounding towns — including Motherwell, Bishopbriggs, Kirkintilloch and Cumbernauld — and the price we put in writing is the price you pay.
